Professor Max Lu, Vice-Chancellor of University of Surrey (UK), delivered a Lecture to QCASE Members

QCASE was honoured to have Professor Max Lu, Vice-Chancellor of University of Surrey (UK), giving a special lecture to QCASE members on the 6th of August 2017.

The lecture titled “Life as an Academic Leader in both UK and Australia” was delivered at the Queensland Centre for Advanced Technologies (QCAT) site of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).

Professor Lu shared his invaluable experiences gained through his long and illustrious career as both a high level manager and academic leader. As the QCASE Honorary President, Professor Lu also shared with the members and friends of QCASE his experience working and living in the UK and Australia. His lecture empowered the QCASE members to pursue excellence in their academic career and provided an exemplary benchmark for them to aspire to.

During his short visit to Brisbane with his wife Lianxiang Liu, Professor Lu kindly delivered this special lecture. Entrusted by Dr Hua Guo (QCASE President and the Director of the Coal Mining Research Program of CSIRO), Dr Xingsheng Li, an expert in rock cutting at the CSIRO and QCASE’s General Secretary, organised and hosted the event. Around 80 academics from the University of Queensland, the Queensland University of Technology, the Griffith University, the University of Southern Queensland, the CSIRO, the Queensland Government and several high-tech enterprises attended the lecture. The lecture extremely well received and promoted much communication and exchange among Chinese scientists and engineers.

Professor Lu is a leading expert and authority in the field of material chemistry, having made outstanding contributions to the nanotechnology and clean energy. His resume boasts over 500 journal papers on nanomaterials that have been cited over 44,000 times, a feat that has seen him named a Thomson Reuters double Highly Cited Researcher. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. He is an appointed Officer of the Order of Australia (AO). He was listed as one of the Top 50 of the Overseas Chinese Scholars in Innovation and New Enterprises in 2016. Previously, he was Provost and Senior Vice-President at the University of Queensland where he was named one of the country’s Top 100 Most Influential Engineers and was in 2016 appointed as the President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey, UK. He is the first Chinese Vice-Chancellor and President of a top university in a western country. Professor Lu was one of the founders of the Federation of Chinese Scholars in Australia (FOCSA) and was the first president of FOCSA. He was also one of the founders of the QCASE. He is an outstanding Chinese representative and academic leader and plays an important role in promoting multicultural and scientific exchanges among China, Australia and the United Kingdom, which he does with aplomb.
